The 2018 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is a wine whose birth I witnessed last year when I visited the domaine and found the just-picked bunches beginning their alcoholic fermentation. It has quite a powerful bouquet of red berry fruit, briar and a potent marine influence, hints of kelp and mudflats evolving with time. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannin, beautifully balanced and fleshy. To be honest, I find that this year the Latricières and Clos-de-Bèze are both endowed with greater complexity, but this does have a silky-smooth finish that is difficult not to fall in love with. As usual, good luck finding a thimbleful, as only 86 liters were produced this year.

Burgundy's smallest red cuvée, the 2018 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru is as explosively aromatic as usual, soaring from the glass with notes of rose petals, orange rind, dried flowers and cinnamon. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with melting tannins, succulent acids and a saline finish. Sadly, since only around 80 liters were produced, it will be almost impossible to find.

Just 86 litres produced. 1.92 ares (less than 0.05 acre). 100% whole bunch. Foot trodden by the (pre-school) kids. Tank sample but about to be bottled. Seductively sweet cherry fruit. Generous and structured, finesse in the almost already silky texture. Refined, subtle yet with underlying depths and great length. Lightly chewy texture, so fresh, gorgeous. Long. Builds in the mouth while remaining velvety. (JH)
