Lightly 'cheesy' nose. Transparent and classic. Really racy with a hint of ripe prunes on the finish that's a little at odds with the lack of density. For Marco Marengo this is a very tannic wine but I was more struck by the fruit. (JR)

La Morra. Deep ruby with small orange rim. Soft ripe and without a lot of depth, perhaps just very young. Stalky tannin, but with good length. Ends warm. (WS)

The 2006 Barolo Brunate is an exotic, beguiling wine laced with dark red fruit, mocha, coffee beans, spices and plums. There is superb concentration and depth in the glass, all of which carries through to a long, resonating finish. This is a rather dark style for La Morra, but everything is impeccably balanced.

Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026. Marco Marengo is one of Piedmont’s emerging superstar producers. Although the Marengo family has made wine here since 1899, it’s as if someone turned on a switch a few years ago, when the wines – the Barolos in particular – went from excellent to outstanding, a level they have maintained ever since. Marengo’s 2007s are every bit as promising as these 2006s, if not a touch deeper. A Marc de Grazia Selection, various American importers, including: de Grazia Imports; tel.
