Score 91/100 · Drink 2017-2024, Mark Squires, Dec 2017

The 2007 Tinto is a library wine, revisited for a checkup. This has aged beautifully. It is showing bits and pieces of mature nuances around the edges. Fresh and lively, with lifted fruit and a vibrant demeanor, it adds an elegant mid-palate. Its tannins are subdued at this point. It shows plenty of finesse, which together with its long finish, gives the wine a sophisticated feel. Many wines in this vintage were not quite so fresh, but this has the acidity to support the fruit. It should be able to hold on nicely for another decade or so, but let's take that in stages. Right now, the complexity blended with the freshness makes this very appealing. That's a hint.

50% Touriga Franca, 40% Touriga Nacional, 10% Tinta Cão. Lovely year. Lots of rain at the right time then very nice summer with unusually cool nights. Exceptionally concentrated crimson. Peppery nose. Very concentrated and rich but with drive and lift. No sign of exceptional alcohol. Very well mannered. Definitely Pauillac influence! Very savoury – no sweetness. Muscular. Tannins quite obvious compared with the 2008. (JR)

Not flattered by being served alongside the accomplished 2009. The oak seems to have become more rather than less obvious. Sinewy rather than fleshy. (JR)

50% Touriga Nacional, 40% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinta Cão. 50% new oak. Deep, dark, black cherry colour. A mineral and savoury edge to the dark fruit, rather Syrah-like on the nose even though there is no Syrah in the blend. Then silky on the palate and very fluid. Apparently effortless but there's depth. Just a little too much oak evident on the finish They have already considerably reduced the percentage of new oak used, down from 100% to 50%, but perhaps it could come down a little further? (JH)
