Tasting notes
The 2017 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is very concentrated on the nose, candle wax and white flowers commingling with clementine and pear aromas. The palate is well balanced, though it is unashamedly oaky on the entry. That will integrate with time, because there is good substance here, along with well-judged acidity, leading to a tangy, quite saline finish. Good potential. This is bottled under screwcap. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

(Leroux made just three barrels of wine in '17 from multiple parcels in En Charlemagne in Pernand-Vergelesses and the top of Les Lolières in Ladoix): Restrained aromas of peach and brown spices. Sappy, broad and savory, conveying a thickness of texture without heaviness. The wine's mineral and earth elements dominate its fruit in the early going. I like this concentrated wine's balance of sweetness and salinity, but it still needs more élevage to expand and gain in length. Finishes with strong minerality and a tannic impression that reminded me of a red wine. (12.7% alcohol)
