Score 93/100 · Drink 2020-2040, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2018

The 2013 Barolo Cerretta is a graceful and silky expression that shows an elegant disposition. This wine is increasingly introspective and insular, but in a good way. It sparks a sudden curiosity in terms of where its future evolution will take it. The results are balanced and delicate, although the intensity is a bit subdued and underplayed at this young stage. Give it time.

Black cherry, plum, mocha, chocolate, licorice and dark spices infuse the 2013 Barolo Cerretta. Powerful and deep, with notable textural richness, the Cerretta shows the most muscular side of Serralunga. The 2013 spent 45 days on skins and was aged in untoasted 600-liter tonneaux . Aging in tonneaux , along with the natural intensity of the site, yields an unctuous, rich Barolo.

The 2013 Barolo Cerretta is a bit darker and more muscular than the Prapò tasted alongside it. The slightly more forward aromatics suggest a greater presence of small oak as well which also pushes the fruit back in favor of more floral/earthy/savory spectrum of aromas and flavors. The insistent, muscular tannins need time to soften, but the real question is how much fruit will be left when that happens, if ever. All things considered, the 2013 is a strong effort, but it would be nice to see a little more freshness.

Serralunga d’Alba. Tasted blind. Lustrous mid ruby. Hints of dried fruit, raspberry and cherry. Gorgeous, elegant cherry fruit and fine yet muscular structure. Burgundian style if firmer. Bags of coating tannins on a lifted cherry and raspberry finish. (WS)
