Tasting notes
Moving to the two 2016s I was able to taste, the 2016 Syrah G2 Vineyard is a true head turner that checks in with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Thrilling notes of blackberries, plums, peppery spice, and caramelized meats all give way to a full-bodied red that has plenty of richness, yet excels on its incredible finesse, elegance, and purity of fruit. It’s another awesome wine from Don Burns that readers should snatch up! I wrote last year: “Readers interested in finding the next up and coming superstar in Paso Robles need to put Don and Claudia Burns’ Turtle Rock estate at the top of their list.” I stand by that statement today, and these latest releases are truly sensational, singular wines that readers need to snatch up!

(made with 30% whole clusters and aged in new oak for 22 months) Inky ruby. Mineral-accented black and blue fruit liqueur, olive paste and incense aromas; a suave floral element builds with air. Sappy, seamless and sweet, offering densely packed blueberry, cherry pie, spicecake and violet pastille flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. The floral and spice notes repeat emphatically on an impressively long, youthfully tannic finish that leaves behind intense blue fruit preserve notes.
