72% Pinot Noir, 28% Chardonnay. Disgorged March 2020. Dosage 4.5 g/l. 2,439 bottles. Very pale bronze colour indeed. Powerful Pinot Noir perfume. Gently rounded fruit – the vintage speaking? (Obviously not the dosage.) More beautiful balance. And quite staggering persistence. This is a really gorgeous wine that you could lose yourself in. Tight bead but the fruit is stronger than the structure. Such beauty in a bottle! (JR)

Disgorged in March 2019 with 4.5 grams per liter dosage, the newly released 2009 Extra Brut Grand Cru 1522 is showing well, wafting from the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of waxy citrus rind, fresh peach, cassis, dried white flowers and hazelnut paste. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and muscular, with an ample chassis of structuring dry extract, ripe acids and a long, sapid finish. This cuvée derives its name from the year in which the Philipponnat family settled in Ay, and it's intended to foreground the virtues of the wines of that village.

An extra-brut from a riper vintage, this has lemon meringue and honey with grilled bread and fresh white flowers. The palate has a super rich feel with supple and juicy, lemon and pink grapefruit flavors, framed in some savory, toasted bread. Very fresh and generously textured. Drink or hold.

The 2009 1522 is terrific, and also a fabulous way for readers to explore the 2009 vintage at Philipponnat. Open-knit and inviting, with impeccable balance, the 2009 1522 has so much to offer. Lemon confit, dried flowers, baked apple and tropical notes from the Chardonnay all meld together in this super-expressive, inviting Champagne. The 1522 is a blend of 40% Pinot Noir from Aÿ, 30% Pinot Noir from Mailly and 30% Chardonnay from Oger, in other words Pinot from the south, Pinot from the north and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs, all from Grand Cru villages. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter. Disgorged: March, 2019.
