The 2017 Scharzhofberger Auslese (AP #8) –Gold Capsule– Versteigerung displays an intense, white/yellow-golden color and opens with a deep, rich and elegant, flinty-scented nose of white chocolate, honey, dried apricots, cumquats, crushed herbs and dried blossoms. It's almost peppery too. On the palate, this is a rich and concentrated, terribly sweet, piquant and seamlessly textured Auslese of great complexity and length. What mineral tension and tight character! There are cumquat flavors on the long aftertaste. This is a stellar Auslese and a radiant superstar of the 2017 Mosel vintage. Tasted in June 2019.

Floral perfume, white raisin and jellied pit fruits soar from the glass rim. The feel is viscous and oily, an impression that – along with flavors of honey, white raisin, dried apricot and quince jelly – complements tangy pineapple core, crystallized ginger and concentrated lemon curd. The finish displays a combination of enveloping richness, sizzling invigoration, rapier penetration and mouth-shaking vibrancy such as one seldom witnesses outside the walls of this fabled estate. The caramelized-fruit character on the nose is almost overwhelming, and the concentration on the palate knocks you back slightly. Still very youthful, but the balance is already near-perfect. Gigantic depth at the super fresh finish, which doesn\'t want to let go. Better from 2019, but it will probably live as long as you or I will!
