The 2013 Gigondas La Colline comes from the first year this parcel of Grenache was bottled separately. Super ripe and concentrated, it shows dense, chocolaty flavors alongside hints of leather and maple syrup. It's full-bodied and velvety, with a thick coating of ripe tannins that should sustain it for up to another decade.

Dark ruby. Heady, smoke- and spice-tinged aromas of dark berry liqueur and candied licorice, lent urgency by a peppery quality. Supple, broad and gently sweet, offering appealingly sweet blueberry and cassis flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. In a lush, generous style but not at all heavy. Finishes smooth, smoky and long, displaying repeating spiciness and velvety, late-arriving tannins.

Vivid ruby-red. Explosive aromas of candied red fruits, incense and potpourri, with suave mineral and vanilla nuances in the background. Sweet, seamless and broad, offering palate-coating black raspberry and cherry compote flavors that are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Emphatically fruity and youthful right now, finishing with excellent thrust and supple, late-arriving tannins.

Glossy crimson. The 17th 2013 Gigondas that I tried was the first to show a little bit of oak (one new 500-litre cask, apparently). Racy and charming and very smooth indeed – rather more urban and cosmopolitan than most Gigondas. Note that this is a very distinctive style. But well made. (JR)
