The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is outrageously beautiful. All the signatures of the year flesh out effortlessly. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint and sweet spice infuse a superb, beautifully layered Chianti Classico loaded with personality and character. The expression of fruit is striking, while the style Antinori favors today that seeks freshness and nuance over power alone is quite evident. The Marchese Antinori Riserva emerges exclusively from the Antinori family's Tignanello estate. In 2015, the Riserva is especially fine.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is Sangiovese sourced from across the 130-hectare Tignanello estate with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot added to the blend. Only 20% of the wine is aged in new oak (barrique and tonneaux from France and Hungary), while the rest goes into neutral barrels. What stands out first is the soft or fleshy nature of the tannins. They are sweet, yet the wine is held together with firm grip and backbone. The aromas are vibrant and dark with mature fruit followed by fragrant rose hip, forest berry and chalky mineral.

San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Sangiovese ‘and other varieties’. Mid crimson. Cherry fruit with ethereal oak and vanilla hints. Oak pretty much evident on the palate and with lots of tangy fruit and slightly drying tannins. Popular approach in a commercial style. (WS)
