From the lieu-dit of the same name, the 2015 Cornas Patou is a pretty, elegant Cornas that has a lifted, perfumed style in its blueberry and cassis fruits intermixed with plenty of classic pepper, game, and olive characteristics. Possessing medium to full-bodied richness, a beautiful sense of minerality, good acidity, and a clean finish, this outstanding, classically style beauty can be drunk anytime over the coming 15 years or more.

Opaque ruby. Deeply perfumed on the nose, displaying scents of ripe dark berries, licorice, cured meat, pungent flowers and smoky minerals. Chewy and expansive on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, olive paste and candied violet flavors complemented by hint of peppery spices. Becomes sweeter and fleshier with air and finishes very long, broad and smoky; building tannins add shape and gentle grip.

The 2015 Cornas Patou came across as closed and somewhat austere in my blind tasting of Cornas. It's full-bodied and concentrated but firmly tannic, with plummy fruit obscured by barrel notes and struck flint. Give it a few years in bottle for it to come around.

Inky purple. Potent, smoke-accented dark berry, cherry pit and licorice scents, along with suggestions of game and cola. Sweet, broad and expansive on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cassis flavors enlivened by a late jolt of cracked pepper. Chewy tannins build steadily on the finish, which hangs on with strong, spicy tenacity.
