Always one of my favorite Petite Sirahs, Jaffurs’ 2012 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard doesn’t disappoint. Its inky purple color is followed by notions of plum, violets, tar and asphalt, and it offers full-bodied richness, loads of sweet fruit and no hard edges. Aged 10 months in 15% new American oak, with the balance a mix of neutral French and American barrels, enjoy this beauty over the coming 4-5 years, although I suspect it will evolve longer. Making their wine in the town of Santa Barbara, Craig Jaffurs and David Yates continue to make a bevy of outstanding wines, all of which remain reasonably priced. Both their 2011s and 2012s are made in a fresher, lighter-weight style that highlights purity and finesse over richness and power. Tel. (805) 962-7003; www.jaffurswine.com

The 2012 Petite Sirah Thompson Vineyard jumps from the glass with super-ripe plums, blackberry jam, cloves, menthol and lavender. The rich, unctuous style is intense and racy to the core, with a deep, inky finish that nearly buries the Petite tannins.
