Deep ruby-red. Ripe but brooding aromas of blueberry and menthol. Fat, ripe and dry, with expressive flavors of dark cherry, raspberry and sweet spices. This wine is usually more closed at this stage, noted Lignier. Plenty of fruit and depth here, and the tannins are sweet and very ripe.

CS Rich and exotically spiced, even a little floral, but with a hint of herbaceousness underneath. Not sure if the middle is delicate or a little hollow. Long tender finish. Somehow the nose and palate don’t quite seem to match at the moment. (JH)

The 2005 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes displays high-toned spice and cherry and raspberry aromas, a simple but pure sweet fruit character and relatively refined tannins on the palate, and a satisfying spiciness in its finish. This wine should be enjoyable for early drinking. Virgile Lignier elected not to filter his 2005s, but I suspected that a couple of them were suffering slightly from their very recent bottling. Also recommended: 2005 Bourgogne ($25.00; 86), 2005 Chambolle-Musigny ($50.00;86+?), 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin ($53.00; 86+?). Various Importers. (from two parcels of 50+-year-old vines in the same lieu-dit Bright red-ruby. Dark raspberry, minerals and a whiff of damp earth on the nose. Less fruity but considerably deeper than the regular Chambolle villages, with a finer grain and more energy. This has more stuffing to support its broad, firm tannins.
