The 2018 Les Grandes Murailles was too reduced for me to assess out of barrel, but I am pleased to say it is blossoming now that it is in bottle. It has a gorgeous black cherry, blueberry, violet and peony nose that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and generous. A counterbalancing salinity keeps the finish focused and fresh. This is an excellent Les Grandes Murailles that should age with style. Superb.

Coming from a great (although tiny) terroir on the upper plateau just next to Clos Fourtet, the 2018 Château Grandes Murailles checks in as 100% Merlot that was brought up in 60% new barrels with the balance in once-used oak and amphora. It's the finest wine I've tasted from this Château and its dense purple color is followed by a monster bouquet of blueberries, black raspberries, spring flowers, cured meats, candied orange, and spring flowers. With full-bodied richness, a voluptuous, layered textured, gorgeous tannins, and the purity and elegance that's the hallmark of the vintage, it's a hidden gem as well as an incredible wine that readers should snatch up. Hats off to the Cuvelier family for a thrilling wine.

The 2018 Les Grandes Murailles was impressive from barrel. It is every bit as convincing in bottle. Rich, deep and exquisitely layered, the 2018 captures a striking mix of the 2018 richness allied to the natural energy that is such a signature of this tiny two-hectare plot on Saint-Émilion's famed plateau. As I mentioned previously, the 2018 has an extra degree of richness that works so well. Blue/purplish fruit, chalk, lavender, spice and new leather abound. Les Grandes Murailles is one of the Sleepers of 2018. Don't miss it.
