Here's a solid expression of Nebbiolo with delicate, almost Burgundian lines. The 2014 Barolo gives off an initial impression of greater power and density. This effect does not last long because the more you contemplate the bouquet, the more you are made aware of its delicate and fine nature. There are blue fruit aromas backed by very pretty tones of crushed mineral, ash and pressed violets. The mouthfeel is broad and persistent, albeit less dense or rich compared to past vintages. Marco Marenga tells me that 2014 reminds him of the 1996 vintage, thanks to the wine's ability to maintain its natural freshness.

Marengo's 2014 Barolo is an impressive entry-level bottllng. Deep, layered and persistent in the glass, the 2014 has a lot to offer. The inclusion of fruit that often goes into Marengo's single-vineyard wines has boosted quality and resulted in an especially serious, brooding Barolo. I would give this another 6-12 months, or more, to allow the tannins to soften further. Marengo's 2014 is a clear overachiever. Don't miss it.
