Vinfolio, Nov 2018

The Clos du Roy 1er Cru comes from perhaps the very best vineyard in the small village of Mercurey AOC. Facing due east, the warm mornings and cool evenings mean that in top vintages the balance of sugar and acidity in the grapes is impeccable; the resulting wines achieve a dazzling degree of complexity and quality that belies the very reasonable price point. Deep ruby colour with a wonderfully expressive fragrant nose. On the palate there is an impressive delineation of fruit clearly picked in optimum condition. The fruit is super fresh and juicy with primary blackberry fruit, black cherry and a touch of candied cherry. Mouth-watering and juicy this is already showing nice approachability and will drink well from 2020 and develop nicely over the following decade.

Aromas of licorice, cassis, dark berries fruits and subtle spices preface Faiveley's 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy, a medium to full-bodied, satiny-textured and attractively layered wine that's deeper and more reserved than the Clos des Myglands, meriting a couple of years' bottle age.

The 2017 Mercurey Le Clos du Roy 1er Cru has a lucid ruby color. The bouquet is richer than the La Framboisière, featuring copious strawberry and cranberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, fine acidity, nice structure and a fresh, marine-influenced finish.
