(from 20-year-old vines in the high-altitude En Brescul, on the Beaune side of the appellation, and vines in Les Chanlins on the opposite Volnay side, planted in 1932; about two-thirds of the potential crop was lost to frost; vinified entirely with whole clusters): Dark red-ruby color. Aromas of dark raspberry and licorice come across as a bit stunted following the village wines from the Côte de Nuits. In a distinctly linear style, with flavors of black cherry and earth. Finishes with seriously clenched Pommard tannins that may prove to be too much for the wine's fruit.

The 2016 Pommard Brescul, from a parcel that Laurent bought with his friends, suffered two-thirds frost damage. I have to say that I found the aromatics here a little disjointed compared to others, the oak not quite as well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a fresh line of acidity, bright and vivid though just bereft of some weight and persistence on the finish.

Planted in the late 1990s on the Beaune side, high up. It was hailed in 2014, just after Lignier bought it. So 2015 was the first proper vintage for Lignier. Half frozen in 2016. Very hard pruned so this fruit was very concentrated. Rich and heady. Flattering fruit. Very crisp and well delineated. Dry finish but lots to enjoy eventually here. Slightly drying finish. (JR)
