By all accounts, the 1928 Poujeaux was undrinkably tannic for several decades, but as it nears its 100th birthday, it is showing superbly today. Offering up aromas of currants, loamy soil, pencil shavings, paraffin wax and a subtle hint of dried ceps, it's medium-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and more than vestigial tannins that still assert themselves on the finish. A bottle from my own cellar was in fact aromatically purer than a bottle tasted at the château several weeks earlier!

The 1928 Poujeaux was served blind by Mathieu Cuvelier, who nonchalantly asked guests to guess the vintage. I replied "1961" (which might give some indication of how fresh this Moulis tasted). Quite deep in color for a wine this old, though consistent with other 1928s, it had such a fresh and vital nose that (as in my case) you would think it half its age. Vestiges of dark fruit here, just a touch of chlorophyll and cedar. It maybe a bit rustic, but it's utterly charming. The palate is medium-bodied, with firm tannin. The structure here is definitely 1928: sturdy and solid—not a wine of finesse but a wine of doggedness. Again, it is the balance and freshness that makes this such a joy to drink. It's a time-defying Poujeaux that will reach a century with ease. Tasted March 2017. Jun 2017, www.robertparker.com
