Tasting notes
Deep brilliant red. Spice- and mineral-accented red berry and cherry aromas are complemented by intense floral and mineral nuances. Alluringly sweet and focused in the mouth, offering vibrant raspberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, candied lavender and exotic spice flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes supple and extremely long, with lingering floral and spice notes and sneaky tannins that lend shape and gentle grip. I have been tasting (and drinking) this domaine's wines since 1985 and I can't say that I have ever had a better one than this.

The 2016 Gigondas offers more density and reminds me of the 2010. Basil, crème de cassis, cracked pepper, and bay leaf notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated, structured 2016 that has awesome purity of fruit. A blend of 78% Grenache, 14% Syrah and the rest Cinsault and Mourvèdre, brought up in foudre, it’s a classic wine from this estate that will keep for 10-15 years.
The tank sample of this domaine's 2016 Gigondas is a bit more rustic than I'd like, with hints of sweaty leather and metallic notes on the finish. That said, it does offer attractive peppery notes, pomegranate and sour plum flavors and a full-bodied, creamy-textured mid-palate. If it doesn't worsen with time, it will be a fine, traditional Gigondas to drink over the next 6-7 years.
