(vinified with 75% whole clusters; no frost here): Wild, musky scents of black raspberry and roasted coffee, lifted by licorice and spice notes. Wonderfully silky on entry, then turns tighter in the middle palate, showing limited pliancy to its dark fruit and licorice pastille flavors. This very backward wine accurately conveys the rocky, thin soil of the site. A distinctly masculine grand cru with a powerful tannic spine and an impression of sound acidity. This wine may need a decade in the cellar to harmonize.

Unlike the Charmes-Chambertin, the 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru was a normal crop since it was unaffected by frost. This vintage includes 80 to 90% whole-cluster fruit. It has a majestic bouquet with bold black cherry and blueberry fruit, superb delineation and it conveys an almost infectious sense of energy. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin but there is that arching, cathedral-like structure one looks for in a Mazoyères. It gently grips the mouth, a little chalkiness coming though on the sorbet-fresh finish. Outstanding.

80% whole bunch. 100% new oak. On the Morey side – much pebblier than Charmes. Firm, concentrated, pungent nose and then gloriously round fruit just about disguises the tannin until the very end. Pretty ambitious and glamorous. Glossy and rich with a dry finish, and long. (JR)
