Score 89/100 · Drink 2019-2025, Neal Martin, Jul 2018

The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a floral bouquet, quite earthy in style but well defined. The palate has a structured, rather backward opening with grainy tannin and a savory, meaty finish that suggests this will be best enjoyed in its youth.

(13.8% alcohol with a bit of chaptalization; vinified with 40% whole clusters and aging in 80% new oak; Forey produced around 35 hectoliters per hectare from his vines in the climats Les Treux and Clos Saint-Denis, close to a normal yield): Good full red. Fruit-driven aromas of black cherry and crushed strawberry show an element of cedary oak. Quite silky and thick on entry, then turns much firmer in the middle palate, with red fruit and mineral flavors dominating. The oak-influenced tannins come across as tighter than those of the two Vosne-Romanée premier crus. Hard to assess today: this may be passing through a temporary tough stage.
