Tasting notes
Lastly, the 2013 Syrah Moaveni Vineyard is 100% Syrah aged in equal parts Gamba and François Frères cooperage. On the back label is a touching quote, “Ode To M,” the “M” standing for Manfred Krankl at Sine Qua Non, who has made a full and miraculous recovery from a near-fatal motorcycle crash. Bevan pays homage to him because he loves the wines and the man. This wine flirts with perfection. Blackberry, blueberry, black raspberry, camphor and charcoal notes soar from the glass, and once the wine hits the palate, there’s no doubt we’re into rarefied air. Meaty, lavender-infused barbecue notes are followed by a sumptuously styled, extravagantly rich, incredibly pure, intense expression of Syrah that should drink well for 20 or more years. Don’t dare miss it, but it is one of his more limited cuvées of only 100 cases (or four barrels).
