Tasting notes
More fresh, lean and precise on the flinty nose than the caramelly regular Auslese is the 2012 Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken R. Bottled with just 12.5% alcohol, it is a lighter but significantly more tension-filled and mineral-flavored Riesling with a young but promising palate. Elegant, lemon-fresh, quite pure, a little bit tannic and very long, this complex wine is still in a valley, but will be back in five years from now. It will go into the market no earlier than 2018 anyway.

Alluring spicy aromas of nectarine, toasted pine nuts and wild herbs. Polished star fruit and understated minerality on the palate, complicated by nut oil. Full yet graceful, with surprising length, this is clearly the finest dry Riesling of the vintage at the estate. It will only be released in 2018.
