Sadly, élevage has not helped the 2017 Maucaillou. Its dried-out fruit and slender build suggest drinking within the next year or two.
The 2017 Maucaillou is deep garnet-purple colored with oaky, earthy, vague plums and cassis notes with an herbal undercurrent. The palate has a good amount of cedar- and spice-laced black fruit with a plush texture and woody finish.
The 2017 Maucaillou has a more fruit driven bouquet than its peers with bold red cherry and raspberry aromas, a hint of camphor loitering in the wings. The palate is medium-bodied with sour cherry on the entry. There is something quite saline about this Moulis, but it just lacks some cohesion and feels a little disjointed on the finish. Maybe it will cohere in the next few months. I hope so.

Owned by the négociant Dourthe, this Moulis property has 87 hectares of vines today (with 67 added by Philippe Dourthe since 1967). Managed and made by an expert team, the quality here is hardly surprising.
