As with the Arômes de Pavie in the 2017 vintage, you can feel the impact of a cooler year just putting the brakes on the intensity of the estate's classic muscular signature, and it's enjoyable. Ready to drink a little earlier than usual, with edges of cassis bud, violets and peonies, coupled with silky tannins and a savoury edge to the blueberry and black cherry fruit, coming across mainly in dried herbs and a touch of rosemary. Mouthwatering on the finish, skilful winemaking from Jean-Baptiste Pion here that deftly puts the spotlight on the limestone soils. Tasted separately to the rest of the vertical, from a bottle I had at home. Gerard Perse owner, Michel Rolland consultant.

Tasted blind. Very deep purplish crimson. Very sweet and exaggerated and too much! Strong tannins and tough, drying, very hot finish. Really quite a trial to taste. But chock-full of chocolate notes. Not very classic! Very sweet. (JR)

Complex nose with a striking medicinal note, but also tons of of elderberry and a touch of old balsamic vinegar. A stunning 2017 with everything you expect from a great St.-Emilion except opulence. Very long, positively dry finish with quite some minerality.

Tasted blind. Saturated ruby-purple in the glass. Deep and dark fruited. Brooding, smoky nose. Ripe and slightly balsamic. Very powerful and rich, a real mouthful. Full bodied and exotic. Perhaps a little modern? Some warming alcohol on the back end, but dense and long with tones of menthol on the finish. (TP)
