The 2017 Teyssier is a very pretty wine to drink now and over the near to medium term. Sweet floral notes, spice, red cherry and cedar are all nicely woven together in this gracious, silky Saint-Émilion from Jonathan Maltus. The 2017 has come together nicely, especially in the integration of the Franc, which was a bit vegetal en primeur.

The 2017 Teyssier is dark in colour. It has an attractive bouquet with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, quite pure and pastille-like. The palate is medium-bodied with a citrus-fresh entry with blackberry and raspberry once more. One of the sharpest Teyssiers that I have tasted, and it should drink well for a decade or so.

The 2017 Teyssier was picked from 18 September to 6 October after frost reduced production by two-thirds. It has a pleasant dark cherry and cassis-scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, a pretty and quite “chiseled” Teyssier that feels long and tender in the mouth. I might well prefer this to the 2015 and 2016.

The 2017 Teyssier is very pretty in this vintage. Like all of Jonathan Maltus's wines, Teyssier is a bit lighter and more laid back than usual, which means it is still a pretty big wine, though. Roasted espresso beans, licorice, menthol and spice notes wrap around a core of pliant, dark red-toned fruit. The blend is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. At this stage, there is a slightly vegetal quality from the Franc that comes through. Sadly, production is just 1/3rd of normal.
