In a vintage where there are plenty of underperforming wines, this is full of pleasure. Real precision, clear crafting of the blue and red berry fruit, set against smoked earth, undergrowth, and crayon, this is a vintage where Gloria can shine, where its softness and generosity offers a cushion to the austerity of the year. 40% new oak, harvest September 18 to 26. Gloria was not impacted by the frost in the early part of the season, thanks to St Julien's location next to the Garonne river, ensuring a normal yield. Remi di Constanzo technical director.

An overperformer in the vintage, the 2017 Gloria exhibits attractive aromas of minty berries and cherries mingled with hints of baking chocolate and cigar wrapper. Medium-bodied, ample and fleshy, with an ample core of juicy fruit framed by melting tannins, this is an elegant, seamless Saint-Julien that already drinks very well.

Tasted blind. Deep ruby-purple colour. Slightly reticent but pure cassis fruit on the nose. The depth comes on the palate – there is real drive of black fruit and bright acidity to offer real energy. There is a sweet, juicy edge to the fruit that makes this soft and approachable. The tannins are fine and offer a delicate structure against the fruit. Should drink well in the medium term. (TP)

The 2017 Gloria is just as delicious from bottle as it was from barrel. A rush of bright red cherry and plum fruit, blood orange, iron, dried flowers and mint gives the 2017 its sense of energy. Medium in body and full of character, Gloria is one of the highlights of the vintage. Don't miss it. Tasted two times.

Gloria

The modest Ch. Gloria was only created in the 1940s, when Henri Martin – a cooper – purchased some vines. With parcels dotted in amongst the region’s Classed Growths, it produces impressive wines. Today it's managed by Vanessa and Jean Triaud (Henri Martin’s granddaughter and grandson-in-law).
