Aromas of wild berries, licorice, dark chocolate and espresso roast introduce the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle, a medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny wine that's elegantly integrated, rounded and gourmand, tightening up on the stony and vibrant finish. On the attack, this is reminiscent of a smaller-scaled version of the Domaine's Charmes-Chambertin, but the tangier, less expansive finish is quite distinct.

(vines at the bottom of this cru sustained some frost damage; vinified with 50% whole clusters; aging in 100% new oak, as are all of the other crus here): A sexy musky note of animal reduction to the aromas of purple and black fruits, violet and saddle leather. Juicy and youthfully imploded but not at all hard, showing a penetrating core of sweet black and purple fruits with solid mineral support. Dense, thick, captivating wine with serious tongue-coating tannins. The palate-staining finish really stimulates the taste buds for such a ripe wine.

60% whole bunch, 100% new oak. Savoury and fresh nose. Real energy and drive here. Not luscious – quite strict. A strict line here. Fine tannins and pretty solid and dense. (JR)
