Double magnum served at Caractère by Véronique Drouhin. Very deep crimson, fresh, almost raw! Tastes of purple fruits and is pretty good. Certainly no excess of ripeness or sweetness. Quite a contrast to the 2020 served alongside. (JR)

Shy nose with only a hint of raspberry and cranberry fruit, plus generous oak. Fine tannins that give grip on the finish, and there's a strong soy and iodine savoury character that lingers too. Pretty tart and restrained. Almost eye-watering in its tension. (RH)
The 2016 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru feels a little static at the moment compared to its peers with plush, slightly confit-like red fruit and the oak conspicuous at present. It’s not overbearing, just a little "trop". The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe, black fruit laced with charcoal and brine notes, gentle in grip but it might well be amidst an awkward phase. I would like to revisit this in a couple of years time. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy.

Joseph Drouhin is one of the largest and most famous producers in Burgundy, making both domaine and négociant wines. It remains family-owned and run, now in the hands of the fourth generation.
