More charisma on the nose than their Echézeaux, with ripe red fruit, creamy texture, vanilla spices and a lovely meaty note on the palate. Complex, broad, nuanced and interesting. Finishes with soy and mushroom flavours. (RH)

Bright ruby-red. Very reticent but sexy aromas of purple fruits and violet complicated by a light leesy suggestion of reduction. Very concentrated and intense, with penetrating harmonious acidity framing and lifting the flavors of blackberry, kirsch , violet and minerals. This sharply delineated wine became downright explosive as it opened with air. Finishes refined and very long, with thoroughly buffered tannins and a refreshing licorice quality.

The 2016 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a surprisingly opulent bouquet with kirsch, red berry fruit and a touch of hoisin vying for attention. The palate is medium-bodied with firm and quite bold tannin, a little brawny toward the finish that is missing the finesse of say, the Clos Vougeot or the Echézeaux at the moment. To be honest, I found this a bit below par and a few furlongs below the Clos de Bèze.
