The 2015 Oestrich Klosterberg Riesling trocken offers a ripe, rich and intense nose, with the oak better integrated than the bloody young 2016 at this early stage. On the palate, this is a piquant, salty and dense Riesling that is far too young and too nervous to be enjoyed today. The mineral backbone is pretty austere here, and the appearance on the palate is less generous at the moment. The finish, however, is tensioned, tight and mineral, very pure and promising, but the 2015 is a bit more austere than the 2016 at the moment. Both wines were aged in the same 30-hectoliter oak vat. Tasted October 2017.

Both nose and palate are offered a remarkable combination of mineral and animal elements reminiscent of sea breezes, kelp and oyster liquor, to which my salivary glands became utterly hostage. Add lemony acidity, bittersweet nuttiness, and a hint of resin from cask for a multilayered, vibrant performance that features the Kühn hallmark of textural richness allied to brightness, clarity and refreshment. A very typical rich, but crisp 2015 that has some real depth. Would rate higher if the finish were more polished. Best through 2023.
