Drink 2022-2035, Vinfolio, Dec 2017

Pale at the rim while dark, brooding and intense at the core. Captivating on the nose; floral with masses of red fruit then a hint of smoky spice on the end. So complex and charming that you just keep coming back for more. Stunningly pure sweet fruit on the palate; seamless in its delivery of pure, precise and intense flavours that linger for minutes. No shortage of power but the luxurious tannins just seem to melt away while the gorgeous acidity adds delicate support.

(the estate owns five plots on a range of different soil, with the vines averaging about 60 years of age): Moderately saturated medium red. Aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry accented by brown spices; the nose suggests a bigger wine than the Clos Saint-Denis. The large-scaled and deeper in the mouth but tightly wound, with its red fruit flavors complicated by soil-driven notes of menthol, stone, dried flowers, spices and underbrush. A bit more powerful and tannic than the Clos Saint-Denis, this wine will also require a minimum of five or six years of aging upon release.

More protected from cold wind than Clos St-Denis. Less elegant and more powerful than his Clos St-Denis. More Morey, he says. Shaded ruby. Sweet and sumptuous on the nose. Very rich and lively with strong fruity notes – raspberries? Taffeta texture. No monster! ‘It’s still mine’, says winemaker Benoît Stehly. Good mineral finish. Very clean. (JR)
