Vinfolio, Nov 2017

Tolpuddle has begun to garner a fantastic reputation worldwide. Made by iconic Aussie winemakers Shaw + Smith, the cool climate of Tasmania means elegant, beautifully balanced Pinot Noirs which marry Burgundian precision with New World intensity of fruit flavour. The wines have garnered huge compliments from Australian wine guru James Halliday as well as the UK’s own Jancis Robinson, who when she first tasted the wines commented that "buying this vineyard was possibly the cleverest thing that Shaw+Smith ever did”. First appearing on our radar in 2013, when we were allocated a tiny quantity of the 2012 vintage, the wines sold fast and we have heard nothing but exceptionally high praise from clients ever since. An elegant expression of Pinot Noir with a fragrant almost perfumed nose showing complex layers of red fruit and flowers. Soft and inviting on the palate with fine-grained tannins. Graceful with an alluring purity of fresh strawberry and cranberry underpinned by bright acidity which carries it through to a long persistent finish. Already approachable. Tasted Nov 2017.

The 2016 Pinot Noir is lovely. Tasmania is capable of a glossy kind of abundance when it comes to Pinot Noir fruit—it's never overt, but it has a plentitude about it. This is the perfect example of that ample, enveloping potential. The good and tempering aspect here is the cage of tannins created by the whole bunch that holds the fruit in place and discourages it from straying off the path. A super wine. So lovely.

50% whole-bunch fermentation. Big crop with bigger berries and bigger bunches than usual. Pale garnet. Low-key gentle nose. Lots of energy here! Really racy and refined. Great purity. (JR)
