Since 1986, Domaine de Chevalier has been producing a pair of second wines made from younger vines for more approachable drinking. Esprit Blanc is fermented and barrel-aged, a blend of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Sémillon. Pale greenish straw. Lovely Sémillon in the ascendant. Really nice, dry white bordeaux with waxiness and interest without the searing acidity of the grand vin when young. But this is not cheap. (JR)

The 2015 Esprit de Chevalier has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, crushed chalk and cedar aromas that feel focused and intense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, quite elegant in style with a smooth and rounded finish. Delightful. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.
Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. Sweet black-cherry fruit on the nose and quite marked acidity on the palate. A bit simple on the finish. (JR)
The 2015 L'Esprit de Chevalier is medium garnet-purple in color with a nose of tar and tilled soil with dried herbs, warm cherries and mulberries plus an accent of red currants. The medium-bodied mouth is firm, chewy, savory and earthy on the finish.
