The 2016 The Chocolate Block checks in as 79% Syrah, 11% Grenache and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Viognier. It’s a more forward, charming effort compared to the top Syrahs and gives up plenty of blackberry and mulberry fruits, spice, and peppery herbs in a medium-bodied, nicely textured, balanced and elegant package. It has integrated acidity, moderate tannin, and plenty to love. Drink it anytime over the coming 4-6 years.

Now all Swartland, I see. Bright crimson. Definitely not chocolatey any more. Grainy and almost Grenachey but that is just 11% and Syrah dominates the blend. Chewy end. Still quite young. Grainy tannins. A little drying on the finish for now. (JR)
