Honeydew and kiwi are laced with cooling mint and basil on a superbly intense nose and a silken-textured, lusciously fruited palate. Unexpectedly, given what came before – though perhaps not given that this is Achleiten – a wealth of mineral elements rush in to render the finish intriguing and dynamic, lending palpable stoniness, peppery bite and mouthwatering salinity. As is often the case with top wines from Achleiten, there is a sense of clarity and focus that – for now, at least – appears to give this bottling an edge vis-à-vis its immediate peers. But lucky are those who will be able to compare all three vintage 2016 Prager Riesling Smaragde as they evolve in bottle.

The 2016 Ried Achleiten Riesling Smaragd offers a clear, precise, and beautifully aromatic bouquet of ripe and concentrated Riesling berries intertwined with flinty aromas of crystalline rocks. On the palate, this is a straight, lean, fresh and very complex Riesling full of salt and needles stimulating your tongue! What a pure, elegant and mouthwatering Riesling this is! The fruit is perfectly ripe and lush and greatly interwoven with the mineral structure of this fascinating 2016. This is a great Riesling classic from the fabulous Achleiten in Weissenkirchen—full of tension, grip and finesse! Riesling lovers shouldn't miss to try it! Tasted in July 2017.
A stunning high-end dry riesling that's still quite shy on the nose, but really concentrated and very finely-nuanced on the palate. Devastatingly beautiful peachy fruit, some honeysuckle and enormous depth at the long, graceful finish. This will age well if you can resist it now. Oct 2017, www.jamessuckling.com
