The vintage where Davide assisted Luca with the blend for the first time, the 2015 Grattamacco is also the first vintage with Cassavecchia added into the blend. (They also shifted to organic viticulture with this vintage.) A dark red color, the nose of the 2015 reveals layered notes of black cherries, delicate menthol, pine, forest floor, and dried lavender. The palate is full-bodied, with broader shoulders, and it expands with ripe tannins, even acidity, and a long and sunny feel on the finish. The ripening in this vintage was seven days earlier than in 2016. It is still very young but has a more immediate feel in terms of vintages overall for this estate. Drink 2026-2040.

The 2015 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is big, bold and absolutely stunning. This blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese is dark and luscious, with overlapping melodies of tobacco, spice, dark fruit and grilled herb. There is so much depth and power. This vintage is a gem for your cellar, and the wine should award a long aging trajectory for those who have the patience to wait. Some 50,000 bottles were made.
Mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and Sangiovese. Fermentation in a 750-litre, conical oak vat, with ambient yeast and manual punchdowns. 21 months in 50% new, 50% second-fill Taransaud barriques. Mid-deep black-ruby. Dark chocolate, vanilla and clove spice oak. Ripe cassis and black cherry can be coaxed from beneath. Juicy acidity, then quite grainy tannins – notably more coarsely textured than the 2016. Some warmth of alcohol and baked character too. (TJ)
Luscious savoury notes that owe a lot to the Bordelais ideal – tobacco, cedar, liquorice, fennel. Excellent fruit power and purity. Long, stately persistence framed by tightly woven tannins – this is one of the best examples from this estate that I can remember. (RH)
About the producer
Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
