The NV Rare Aged Tawny 50 Years is a spectacular wine, utterly immune from hyperbole. It manages sleek restraint, with earth shattering power and length, and it has a palate that is fine and structured yet pure and unctuous. To the flavors: there is dark chocolate-coated mejool dates, clove, star anise, nutmeg, some aniseed and autumn leaves, blood orange, coffee grounds and forest moss. The acidity is measured in fine strands, and the length of flavor seamlessly flows into the next sip, regardless of the pause. This is astonishing detail and capacity for kaleidoscopic complexity. Wow, in a word. 330 bottles made each year. 19.5% alcohol.

Pale tawny/amber colored with a green tinge at the rim, the NV 50 Year Old Rare Tawny (Series Three) has a gorgeous walnut and fruit cake-laced nose with a core of liquid licorice, coffee, treacle, roasted nuts and salted caramel. The palate is decadently rich and unctuous with tons of sweetness and the freshness to balance with an epically long fruit and nut finish.

Pale tawny-brown in color and exuding an incredibly complex nose of walnuts, gingerbread, Manuka honey, treacle / molasses, plus tons of earth notes that show nuances of bark, loam and fungi and later-emerging wafts of exotic incense and spice notes of sandalwood, cloves and spice cake, the Penfolds Series Two 50 Year Old Port is a very big, rich and intense Port-style wine with a wonderful array of aromas and flavors, a crisp line of acid and an epically long finish.

Wine from 1915, 1940, 1945, with an average age of 50 years. They release only 330 bottles a year to maintain the solera. Several varieties including but not limited to Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet . This is Series 2 (Series 1 was released last year). More orange and brown on the greenish tawny rim. Quite tough and losing fruit. (JR)
