Score 88/100 · Drink 2017-2021, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jul 2017

(aged 18 months in new French oak): Saturated ruby to the rim. Almost porty aromas of blackberry, kirsch and dark chocolate. Concentrated, fine-grained and sweet but also with decent violety, minty lift to the dense dark berry fruit. Doesn't show the finesse of texture of the Obertura or Ultra wines, and the dusty tannins come off as more dominant and chocolatey on the back end, which also displays slightly edgy acidity.

The 2013 Mai is Malbec from their old vineyard in Vistalba. It's surprisingly ripe and heady for what I expected from a year like 2013, with aromas of dark berries, plenty of oak (it's still aged in brand new French barriques for 18 months) in a style that made me think of the wines from the 1990s. Dark, concentrated and powerful, the palate shows abundant dusty tannins that call for hearty food. Very good in its style. 8,411 bottles produced.
