While Roty's 2014 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is far from maturity, it's surprisingly approachable today, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries and plums mingled with hints of licorice and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it's a deep, nicely concentrated wine with polished tannins, lively acids and a long, sapid finish. It's finer-boned than the richer, more muscular Charmes.

Good dark red. Deep but restrained aromas of red fruits, smoke and game, with a note of cassis emerging with air. Not hugely fleshy for grand cru but terrific saline minerality and penetrating acidity gives shape and cut to the sappy strawberry and raspberry fruit flavors. Quite saline but youthfully discreet today, finishing with lingering notes of red cherry and wild strawberry and very suave tannins. Roty's 2014 grand crus were aged in 100% new oak.

Bright, dark red. Lovely lift to the blackberry, licorice and violet aromas; more ethereal than the Fontenys. Firmly built but with a sweetness and enticing spicy lift to its black raspberry and floral flavors. A very refined version of Mazy, showing pure fruits and no animal character. Good depth of material here. Finishes fine and long, with the tannins folded neatly into the wine's fruit.

The 2014 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, from vines planted by Charles Roty at the beginning of the 20th century, has a very refined bouquet, very elegant, much more understated than recent vintages from Roty; it has hints of menthol and violets infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin, very silky in the mouth with a keen thread of acidity maintaining tension and poise. This is very seductive, very sophisticated and a great wine from Roty. Dec 2015, www.robertparker.com
