In 2010 The Wine Society went back to Barge’s traditional du Plessy cuvée, which is mostly Côte Blonde and has a little Viognier fermented together with the Syrah. Mid cherry red with bricky rim. So much more fruit than on the 2011, much more fragrant and pretty on the nose. Very fine texture, nicely dry but needs food. (JH)

The 2010 Cote Rotie Cuvee du Plessy may be the best he has ever made. Notes of bouquet garni, roasted meats, spice box, raspberries, black cherries and sassafras are all present in this lush, mid-weight Cote Rotie. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Gilles Barge’s offerings are all traditionally made, old style Cote Roties, but he does appear to have made some moderate concessions by picking riper fruit, at least for the Cote Brune cuvee. 2010 is one of the finest vintages I have tasted from Barge, whose wines are often too herbaceous for my tastes.
