Deceptive in its translucence, the Latricières-Chambertin is another Leroy 2014 that speaks eloquently of place. Finesse and marvelously sculpted in the glass, the Latricières is simply mesmerizing. Savory herb, smoke, tobacco and graphite inflections add complexity throughout. Here, too, it is an overall impression of regal beauty that is deep and lasting. What a profoundly beautiful wine this is.

The 2014 Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru was more open and transparent than the other grand crus this year, with black fruit more than red, a touch of earthiness and a hint of wild mushroom. The palate is quite saline on the entry, typically rather foursquare and correct, the acidity extremely well judged with a controlled -- you could almost say -- conservative finish.

For many, Domaine Leroy represents the pinnacle of fine Burgundy. Owned and run by the legendary Lalou Bize-Leroy, the domaine in Vosne-Romanée is one strand of the Leroy empire, along with Maison Leroy and Domaine d’Auvenay.
