Dark ruby. Powerful, mineral-accented cherry and black raspberry scents are complemented by suggestions of exotic spices, violet and licorice. Supple and broad in the mouth, offering intense red and blue fruit liqueur, spicecake, vanilla and violet pastille flavors that become sweeter as the wine takes on air. The floral note carries strongly through the expansive, spice-tinged finish, which shows excellent clarity and velvety, slow-building tannins.

(50% new oak): Glass-staining ruby. Heady, exotically perfumed red and dark berry scents are complicated by suggestions of star anise, violet and cola. Sweet, seamless and penetrating in the mouth, offering intense boysenberry and black raspberry flavors that deepen steadily on the back half. Rich yet lithe, with strong closing thrust and silky, even tannins lending framework and gentle grip.

He also makes a traditional style of Côte Rôtie that’s not destemmed and is brought up in barrel (I believe mostly older barrels). The 2015 Côte Rôtie is loaded with gamy and meaty characteristics, as well as blackcurrants, raspberries, olive tapenade and loads of peppery spice. Full-bodied, layered and beautifully ripe, forget bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following decade or more.

Deep red robe. The bouquet is tightly drawn together, rests on notes of black olives, southern strength; it is a real glass filler potentially. The palate is also robust, makes a firm point as it starts, is amply filled with coursing gras and fleshy matter. A wine of abundance, for red meats, has one foot in the north, the other in the south of France. It chases you around the room, has lots to offer, is an energizing drink.
