A wine readers need to snatch up is the 2015 Gigondas as it way over-delivers and is up with the finest examples of the classic Gigondas made. Based on 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 14% Syrah and a splash of Cinsault, aged in 15% new barrels, it boasts terrific notes of sweet cassis and black raspberry fruits, garrigue, toasted spices and pepper. With full-bodied richness, beautiful sweetness of fruit and an opulent, sexy texture, it will drink nicely for 10-15 years. Louis Barruol’s Chateau de Saint Cosme is unquestionably one of the reference point estates in Gigondas, as well as the entire southern Rhône Valley. The estate lies just to the east of the village and covers 25 hectares, with 15 of those in Gigondas. He makes a classic Gigondas as well as four single vine releases from single vineyards located around the estate. The wines are not destemmed and aged mostly in older barrels, with a small portion in new barrels.

A medium to full-bodied blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre raised in a combination of concrete, foudres and barriques, the 2015 Gigondas offers lovely spice and garrigue notes, dark fruit and a long, dry finish. It's a classic introduction to the appellation.
Lurid ruby-red. Ripe red berries, pungent flowers, musky herbs and a hint of game on the highly perfumed nose. Sweet red fruit and lavender pastille flavors show very good depth and an energizing jolt of peppery spices on the back half. Finishes spicy, focused and long, with resonating red berry character and sneaky tannins lending shape.
Starting with the 2015 Gigondas Classique from Barruol, this blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and the rest Syrah and Cinsault will be a wine that readers will want to stockpile. Full-bodied, rich, beautifully textured and layered, with killer notes of crème de cassis, white pepper, spice and garrigue, it’s a classic Gigondas that will drink well for 15+ years.
