Score 86/100 · Drink 2020-2025, Neal Martin, Jan 2019

The 2016 Francs Magnus is very reduced on the nose at the moment and difficult to make out. The palate is hard and masculine, displaying lots of extracted tannin, and the finish is dry and foursquare. Maybe the fruit is hidden at the moment; leave this for another 18 months or so, because it does convey a sense of balance.

Plenty of good fruit here with ripe tannins and a berry, light vanilla character. Medium-bodied, clean and bright. Better than the 2015.

The 2016 Francs Magnus offers good upfront juiciness, with good depth and fine balance. Today, the oak is a bit overpowering, but otherwise, this is a tasty Fronsac to drink upon release. Hubert de Boüard consults.
