Tasted blind. Quite interesting and spicy on the nose. One of the few wines in this flight which seems to have almost enough fruit to overwhelm the (considerable) tannin. Lowish acidity and not quite enough stuffing. (JR)

A tight, backward Saint-Emilion, the 2016 Château La Couspaude has plenty of spicy oak as well as medium to full-bodied richness, good concentration, a tight, vibrant mouthfeel, and beautiful cassis and violet-tinged purple fruits. It’s an impressive wine that’s mostly potential at this point. Give bottles 3-4 years in the cellar and it’s going to drink nicely for 10-15 years or more.
The 2016 La Couspaude has a backward bouquet of grippy black fruit and a touch of chocolate mint chip. The palate is super-sweet and tarry on the entry, displaying dense black fruit, cloying sweetness and heavy-handed toasty oak on the finish.
