The 2016 Lafon-Rochet failed to match two exceptional examples poured five years ago. Here, it feels a little oakier than its peers, more savoury and a little leathery by comparison. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, white pepper and five-spice, though the finish is a little muscular at the moment. Give this time. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

Aromas of smoke, incense, black currants and expressive dark fruit. Assertive yet sleek tannins. This will age well over the coming years. Drink or hold. 10 Years On retrospective.

The 2016 Lafon-Rochet is very intense on the nose. A mixture of red and black fruit, crushed violet, wild mint and crushed stone unfolds with aeration. It's perhaps a little Barolo in style. The palate is beautifully balanced with supple tannins, very velvety smooth with lovely acidity and sensuality on the finish. Gorgeous. A high point for the estate. Tasted at the Lafon-Rochet vertical at the property.

Based on 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot, the 2016 Château Lafon-Rochet comes from healthy yields of 46 hectoliter per hectare and was raised in 50% new barrels. While I wasn't able to taste this wine on release (I purchased this bottle locally), it's certainly showing potential today. Deep purple/plum-hued, it has a ripe, powerful bouquet of blackberries, truffly earth, licorice, bay leaf, and spicy oak. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated Saint Estèphe with a solid spine of acidity, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and should have two decades of prime drinking. I don't think this matches the brilliant 2019, but it's not far off.
