Inky ruby. Heady, smoke- and spice-accented blackberry, boysenberry and violet aromas show excellent clarity and pick up a hint of olive with air. Sweet and broad on the palate, offering deeply concentrated dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that show surprising energy for their heft. The very long, penetrating finish features firm, minerally cut, an echo of juicy blue fruit and chewy tannins that come in late. This brawny wine carries 15% alcohol.

I loved the 2015 Côte Rôtie Lieu Dit Montmain (100% Syrah aged in 15% new oak), which comes from a site in the northern part of the appellation, just past Les Grandes Places. It offers a surprisingly nuanced, elegant style as well as terrific notes of dried flowers, caramelized raspberries, spice and dried herbs. Inky colored, concentrated and forward, with sweet, polished tannin, drink it anytime over the coming 10-15 years. The only downside to these latest releases from Ferraton? They’re made in tiny quantities and there’s just not enough to go around. For readers who don’t know, this estate is managed by Michel Chapoutier, yet they have their own vineyard sources and winemaking team.

Dense and tightly packed, the 2015 Cote Rotie Lieu-Dit Montmain will need some time to come around. Right now, it offers little more than hints of espresso and black olives, ample weight and concentration, firm tannins and a long, raspberry-tinged finish.

(15 percent whole clusters) Inky ruby. Vibrant and focused on the nose, displaying intense red and dark berry, potpourri and Asian spice scents and deeper suggestions of licorice and olive that build with air. In an energetic style, especially for the vintage, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that flesh out and become sweeter on the back half. Fine-grained tannins frame and shape the finish, which lingers with strong, floral-driven persistence.
