A soft, open-knit red, the 2012 Esprit de Pavie is a good choice for drinking over the next few years, while the fruit remains plaint and bright. Esprit de Pavie is Gérard Perse's entry-level wine and is a blend of declassified fruit from a number of his properties. The 2012 is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc.

I don’t think I’ve ever tasted this wine from Gerard Perse. It is a blend of 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon. Supple-textured, with plenty of black cherry and blackcurrant fruit as well as a touch of earth and spice, this straightforward 2012 is medium-bodied, with loads of fruit. While it lacks some complexity, it is a gutsy, juicy mouthful of wine to drink over the next 5-6 years.
70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc. Lively and bright on the nose but a bit lean on the palate. Dryish finish. (JH)
About the producer
The slopes of Château Pavie were planted as far back as the fourth century by the Ancient Romans and it has been a well-known producer in Saint-Émilion since the middle of the 19th century.
