Bright medium red. Highly perfumed, soil-driven aromas of raspberry, mocha, spices and earth, all lifted by rose petal; a slightly balsamic cedary quality adds complexity. Pliant, concentrated, spicy red berry and floral flavors display a sexy saline quality. Conveys a strong impression of site character and inner-mouth tension, delivering excellent palate coverage without any impression of weight. More pliant than the basic 2014 Central Otago bottling, but this beauty has a firm spine of acidity and suave, tongue-dusting tannins. Really complex, intense wine, but still a bit tight and in need of aging.

The 2013 Last Chance Pinot Noir has a medium ruby-purple color and nose of red currants, black cherries and dark chocolate with hints of menthol, dried herbs and violets. Medium-bodied, it fills the mouth with bramble berry flavors and an elegant, tightly knit structure of satiny tannins and great frshness, finishing long with a herbal lift.

This shows plenty of the trademark fragrances and perfumes with hints of wild thyme and a poached cherry and raspberry fruit core; it's really in tune with the established style of this southerly vineyard. The palate has crunchy fruit flavors set amidst sturdy tannins and looks full of promise. Drink now. May 2015, www.jamessuckling.com
